Tonsillectomy Day 3 - I'm miserable

I woke up several times throughout the night…again.  The first few nights weren’t all that bad, but today was brutal.  As I wake up, the pain medication has worn off.  Not only do I have the worst sore throat of all time, but I now have the worst ear pain and I’m running a fever (apparently this is normal).  I also have a horrible headache.

It hurts to speak, so I don’t talk much.  As you can imagine, I’m not eating much either.  I actually watched the Phantom Gourmet this morning.  I don’t know why.

The pain meds are making me drowsy (especially if I don’t have much to eat).  I took a dose at 2:30 today and fell asleep.  I didn’t wake up until 8:30 in the evening.  It wasn’t easy getting out of bed.

The only bright spot today was receiving the Ryan Adams vinyl in the mail.

Evan Dando to play Great Scott

Evan Dando, who most know as the lead singer of the Lemonheads, is coming to Great Scott February 3rd.

Tickets are $15 and can be found here.

Last time I saw Evan, it was at the Paradise when the Lemonheads played the album It’s a Shame about Ray in it’s entirety.  Here’s a few videos I took that night.

Tonsillectomy - Day 2

Friday, November 6th

Normally, I have no trouble sleeping.  Last night was not the case.  I woke myself up several times by snoring.  Typically I don’t snore, but I’m guessing it’s due to the swelling.  Waking up was no picnic either, as the percocet wore off.  My throat was dry and the pain was rough (felt like the worst sore throat ever).  I found that taking a 10ml dose of the percocet lasts about five hours.  Sleeping any longer than that is not good.

Eating was minimal today.  I had more broth, soup, yogurt, popsicles, and plenty of water.  I am realizing that cool water is my best friend.

I actually looked at my throat for the first time since the surgery.  I won’t get into detail, but I’ll just say it did not look good.

Girls play Great Scott tonight (sold out)

This really isn’t much of a surprise, as the San Francisco band has been getting a lot of attention recently.  It doesn’t hurt that Pitchfork gave their album a 9.1 either.

Tonsillectomy - Day 1

Thursday - November 5th

This morning I woke at 5:00am and made my way to Mass Eye & Ear in Boston.  I arrived at the hospital at 5:45, filled out the necessary paperwork, answered the necessary questions, and had a brief visit with the anesthesiologist.

I was then taken to a pre-op/post-recovery room with hospital cots, and I was given my stylish hospital clothes.  My surgery was scheduled for 7:45, but it would be delayed a few hours due to the fact I drank a glass of water at 5:30 before I left the house.  This was a big no-no.

I did receive a phone call the day before my scheduled surgery with instructions.  Apparently, the woman said not to eat or drink anything after midnight.  I only heard the eat part, and missed the drink.  In my defense, the woman had a pretty thick Irish accent.

So I waited.  They gave me the only magazine they could find - Better Homes and Gardens.  As I was lying in my cot, I moved my legs up, bent my knees, and read the magazine.  The nurse came over to kindly tell me I was flashing everyone (my hospital gown wasn’t quite covering everything).  We both had a good laugh.

The call came, and it was time to wheel me to the elevator.  I was taken downstairs to another pre-op room, where they double checked everything.  Brief visits from the anesthesiologist and my doctor, and I was off to the operating room.

It was chilly, and as they were wheeling me to the operating room, I heard America’s “Sister Golden Hair” playing in the hallway.  Nothing like a classic mellow 70’s song before being put to sleep.

America - Sister Golden Hair

I’ve never been given anesthesia before, and it was all a bit surreal.  I remember the anesthesiologist telling me he was putting me to sleep, and then giving me oxygen to breathe.  A few moments later, and it felt like I had needles lightly pressing on my face.  I asked him if it was normal, and he said yes.  That was the last thing I remember.

I wake up in the recovery room and it’s 11:00.  Everything is a little foggy.  When I come to, it felt like someone poured gasoline down my throat and lit a match.  The nurse gave me some ice chips, and then some morphine for the pain.

I was taken back upstairs where I was given ice water and popsicles.  I was also given a dose of liquid percocet (the pain medication I would be prescribed).

My roommate was kind enough to take me home, and it was off to CVS where they filled my prescriptions for the half liter of liquid percocet (yup, half liter) and liquid antibiotics.

The rest of the day wasn’t too bad.  I ate soup, applesauce, popsicles, and drank plenty of water.  However, everything I have read and heard tells me the pain is going to get much worse before it gets better.

Surgery

My surgery went well.  The folks over at Mass Eye & Ear were great.

First day of recovery is going better than expected, and I’ll write a more detailed post tomorrow.

Last supper and such...

Tonight I’ll have a nice dinner, as it will be my last solid meal for a while.  Tomorrow at 7:45am I will get my tonsils removed, which means I have to be at the hospital at 5:45.

I went to the store today and stocked up on soups, broth, yogurt, apple sauce, popsicles, etc.

I am not looking forward to this.

Monsters of Folk: Orpheum Theatre - Boston 11.3.2009

The show last night was great.  The setlist was pretty similar to the one I posted yesterday (Greek Theater - LA).  They sounded great as a group, and all shined individually over the course of the evening.

Once the show started, security was telling everyone with cameras to put them away.  Apparently, the band did not want photos taken (so they said).  So I settled for a few audio recordings (with my camera) instead.

Fran & Andy of Travis tonight (acoustic) @ the Somerville Armory

I was first introduced to Travis back in the winter of 2001.  I spent time in London on a work abroad program after college, and saw the video for “Turn” on the TV one day.  I was hooked.  I bought their CD The Man Who, and the rest is history.  I remember listening to that CD on my disc-man (there were no IPODs yet) daily, as I made the half hour walk to work.  Listening to it today still brings back many memories of London, and that era of my life.

Looks like there are only about 10 tickets left for tonight’s show.  Available here.

http://www.artsatthearmory.org/

The “gem” of the Armory, this is our largest performance space. It is well-suited for anything from a lively concert to a catered fundraiser.

With over 7,000 square feet of performance space, the Performance Hall has hosted arts and craft fairs, musical performances, conferences and charity events. Its capacity is 325 seated to 395 standing. A beverage station (bar) and ample restrooms are available without needing to leave the auditorium. A mahogany-framed 9X9 stage is usually set up on the right-hand side of the room. Limited tables and chairs are available and included with the cost of rental, though the space is fully customizable to your desired specifications.

November 1   - The Armory, Sommerville, MA
November 3    - Jammin Java, Vienna, VA (sold out)
November 4      World Cafe Theatre, Philadelphia, PA
November 6-8 & 10-12     Joe’s Pub, New York, NY (all dates sold out)
